St Patrick's Day Parade London

ST PATRICK'S DAY PARADE LONDON 2008

The Parade will take place on March 16 2008. The Parade will see marching bands from Ireland and the UK, community groups, sports cubs, schools and street theatre take to the streets of central London for a fun filled family spectacle.

The Parade starts at 12noon from Hyde Park Corner so get to your chosen viewing spot with time to spare. 

This year we aim to have representation from 33 counties – all 32 Irish counties and London Irish too. More information on how to register to walk behind your county flag of choice.

History of St Patrick

Saint Patrick described himself as a "most humble-minded man, pouring forth a continuous paean of thanks to his Maker for having chosen him as the instrument whereby multitudes who had worshipped idols and unclean things had become the people of God."

Saint Patrick is most known for driving the snakes from Ireland. It is true there are no snakes in Ireland, but there probably never have been - the island was separated from the rest of the continent at the end of the Ice Age. As in many old pagan religions, serpent symbols were common and often worshipped. Driving the snakes from Ireland was probably symbolic of putting an end to that pagan practice. While not the first to bring christianity to Ireland, it is Patrick who is said to have encountered the Druids at Tara and abolished their pagan rites. The story holds that he converted the warrior chiefs and princes, baptizing them and thousands of their subjects in the "Holy Wells" that still bear this name.

It will be the last day of the 6 Nations 2008 which will most probably decide of the winner. A giant screen will be situated under a heated 100m2 marquee along with a outdoor bar.
Food & Live music:
The sausage monkeys will be playing just after the last game, in the marquee, a full set of rock covers, including Irish tunes. An outdoor barbecue will be available all night.
